Ardrossan, North Ayrshire
Newer images of the castle ruins taken in the late afternoon in January 2017.
The castle is on a prominent hill above the ex-fishing port, marina and ferry terminal.
The ruins are on Castle Hill just to the south of the main town centre.
Seemingly there are stories of ghosts and ethereal events among the ruins with some people claiming it's haunted by the ghost of William Wallace.
It's also just about the only castle in Scotland that was never slept in by Mary, Queen of Scots.
Just to the north of the castle is this ruined graveyard and presumably the outline of a chapel.
There also seems to be an outer wall as shown by the rise in the ground circling the site.
It's said to be the burial site of Fergus of Ardrossan, the only lord from Ayrshire to sign the
Declaration of Arbroath in 1320.
