Loch Doon Dark Sky Observatory
south of Dalmellington, South Ayrshire
This is the new Scottish Dark Sky Observatory just to the north of Loch Doon in South Ayrshire
It was still being built when these were taken in September 2012.
This facility will give the people of the area excellent access to high-powered telescopes under virtually ideal conditions.
The area to the right of the observatory is for people to set up their own telescopes.
This view shows Loch Doon in the background, to the south.
To reach the observatory turn right onto the forest road a mile or so south of Dalmellington on the A713 - or left just before Dalmellington if heading north.
The plan is to take more photos once the place is completed and the main telescope is installed, hopefully with the dome open to show the equipment inside.
Thanks are due to all those concerned for the access to the site.
This is a cropped image taken from more square on.
A more overhead view with a couple of people included to give you an idea of scale.
