Greenan Castle - South Ayrshire

Greenan Castle, Doonfoot, South Ayrshire, Scotland

Just to the south of Doonfoot in Ayr.

First of all, these photos have been edited to hide the metal support frames and the brickwork used to replace missing stone.

It doesn't look nearly as nice in real life.

The castle was built around 1602-4 for the Kennedy family, based at Baltersan just south of Maybole (also in ruins) and replaced an earlier construction by the Davidson family.

The Doonfoot bridge nearby can be seen here: Doonfoot Millennium bridge

More of a keep than a castle. From offshore and taken at low tide.

The castle was eventually abandoned as a home around 1766.

The people in white at the bottom left on the edge of the shadow give you some idea of scale.

Looking north-east towards the Doonfoot area.

From slightly lower and further back to show the location better.
