Irvine Big Idea site
North Ayrshire

There is talk of this old bridge being taken down and replaced with
a new road bridge to enable access to the Ardeer Peninsula.
It may happen one day, but not any time soon.

Part of the plan is to demolish the Big Idea (the curved roof building) and replace
it with a hotel, golf course and all the usual tourist trappings.

Looking north. For the sake of good taste the graffiti has been edited out.

The bridge alone. It opened (opens?) by sliding the northern section to and fro to let boats pass under.
As far as can be judged it hasn't been closed for about twenty years so the mechanism might be a little stiff.
Presumably any new bridge would have to do the same thing by opening in some fashion.
