Crossraguel Abbey - South Ayrshire
Ayrshire's - and possibly Scotland's - best kept medieval secret.
This is the most complete French Clunaic Abbey left in the UK. While most
other old abbeys are little more than a few stones in the grass marking where
the walls were Crossraguel has many walls standing and several complete rooms
with vaulted ceilings and roofs still intact.
The acoustics in the restored chapter house, next to the cloisters, are
particularly spectacular and alone make it well worth a visit. Take your
favourite instrument or opera singer with you and give yourself a treat.
It's just south of Maybole, Ayrshire on the A77 main coast road.
